backyard playsetsIt's that point of 12 months again: playset season. Enough time when an incredible number of parents get ready to pay out thousands of dollars for small-scale garden jungle gyms for his or her beloved children. For a long time I'd managed to effectively avert this dependence on suburban family life. And, 1 day something happened.I cracked.I cannot even blame my kids. They never badgered me or complained. I'm not even sure they needed a playset. No. I wanted one.Whenever we were outside in the back garden my kids wandered around aimlessly, invariably coming back inside to the couch. I wanted to shoo them back again outdoors and shout, "Go play!" But using what? We didn't have a pool or swings or perhaps a paved driveway to sketch on. I chosen for my own sanity and their survival we needed a playset.Visions of warmer summer months times whiled away over a swingset or in the attached fort with children's laughter floating by on a balmy breeze, danced in my head. But I wanted one thing to be properly clear. If I was going to take out a second mortgage to funding a playset, my kids were heading to have to live on it--literally.The playset we eyed-up acquired a house-like enclosure and a picnic table and was basically as large as my house. It had been certainly a suitable dwelling for just two smallish people. They could come inside for the wintertime however, not until then. And when we ran some electric wiring and domestic plumbing to the fort, I would never have to see them again. But much like most fantasies, once understood, the facts on the floor don't quite match the eyesight, and so it was with the playset. My research on playsets commenced well before planting season because I thought if we bought in the off-season, we would be able to get a reasonable price. I was mistaken. A couple of no fair prices as it pertains to playsets. I have no idea if the hardware is stable gold or if the composition is made of rare, endangered real wood, but bargains are not to be had. THEREFORE I considered a choice a friend recommended: used playsets. One could get a whole playset for half the price. That had my name written around it.Unfortunately, it didn't have my husband's name written on it. He was against the complete playset idea from the beginning--it would affect his lawn. If, however, I was going to insist he recognize he has children and they require playthings, then he decided he would need a deluxe model worth being placed atop his pristine yard.Still, I persisted in my seek out pre-owned models, convinced I could fulfill us both. And I was successful in finding a used playset in relatively good condition large enough for just two school-age kids. It even had a rock wall. But the best part was it only cost about a thousand bucks. Win was mine. Then my hubby described the playset was somewhere outside the tri-state area, and we didn't have a car large enough to move it even if we does want to take the half-day drive to visit get it. I nodded silently. I grasped. And with much heart, I quit on my used playset search. For people who have never had the knowledge of shopping for a playset, it's quite a daunting task. There are many makes and models and levels and configurations to choose from, and all the genuine playthings are extra. Perhaps you may buy a reasonably cheap wooden body, but your children can do is stare at it wistfully because it would be nothing more than an large sawhorse.I continued to shop around online for weeks until the day finally came up when I spotted my dream golf swing set. It experienced everything I'd imagined. Really the only problem was I couldn't find the money for it. During the period of the next weeks, I went to the playset several times, hoping to happen upon a sale. Then, mid-summer, it finally occurred. The company acquired what constituted a storewide sale in playset circles: free gangplank weekend. I got sold.Free gangplank weekend was a huge coup for me personally, and I breathed a sigh of pain relief that the hunting and agonizing and planning was over. Then your sales guy hit me with the expenses. Slightly below $2,000. And it was FREE gangplank weekend! The playset has been bought and payed for, sent and erected inside our yard for nearly each year, but it hasn't been played with much. Or maybe I should say it hasn't been played with around $2,000 would warrant. We haven't made our money back onto it yet, but a few items have been worthy of their price. The swings and trapeze pub. That's really all you need. Take it from someone whose been used up.The youngsters still wander aimlessly about the yard, ignoring the main one component, the most expensive one, that they lobbied so vehemently, the fort. It rests empty aside from the birds and the squirrels. But maybe if we installed a Television set in there...
