backyard playsetsIt's that time of time again: playset season. Enough time when millions of parents prepare yourself to pay out thousands for small-scale backyard jungle gyms for his or her beloved children. For years I'd managed to successfully avert this requirement of suburban family life. And then, 1 day something happened.I cracked.I can't even blame my kids. They never badgered me or complained. I'm not even sure they needed a playset. No. I needed one.Whenever we were outside in the backyard my kids wandered around aimlessly, invariably returning inside to the couch. I wanted to shoo them back again outdoors and shout, "Go play!" But with what? We didn't have a pool or swings or even a paved driveway to draw on. I made the decision for my very own sanity and their survival we needed a playset.Visions of warmer summer months days and nights whiled away over a swingset or in the fastened fort with children's laughter floating by on the balmy breeze, danced in my own head. But I needed a very important factor to be perfectly clear. EASILY was going to take out another mortgage to financing a playset, my kids were heading to have to go on it--literally.The playset we eyed-up had a house-like enclosure and a picnic desk and was pretty much as big as my house. It had been certainly a suitable dwelling for two smallish people. They could come inside for the winter however, not until then. If we ran some electric wiring and plumbing related to the fort, I might never have to see them again. But as with most fantasies, once recognized, the facts on the floor don't quite match the perspective, and so it was with the playset. My research on playsets commenced prior to planting season because I thought if we bought in the off-season, we may be able to get an acceptable price. I was mistaken. You can find no acceptable prices when it comes to playsets. I don't know if the hardware is sound yellow metal or if the structure is made of rare, endangered real wood, but bargains are not to be had. So I considered a choice a friend recommended: used playsets. One could get a complete playset for 50 percent the purchase price. That got my name written around it.Unfortunately, it didn't have my husband's name written onto it. He was against the complete playset idea from the beginning--it would damage his lawn. If, however, I would insist he recognize he has children and they require toys, then he established he would need a deluxe model worthy of being located atop his pristine lawn.Still, I continued in my seek out pre-owned models, persuaded I could satisfy us both. And I was successful to find a used playset in relatively good condition large enough for just two school-age kids. It even possessed a rock wall membrane. But the best benefit was it only cost about a thousand bucks. Triumph was mine. Then my husband described the playset was someplace outside the tri-state area, and we didn't have a car large enough to transport it even if we do want to take the half-day drive to move get it. I nodded silently. I known. And with much heart, I gave up on my used playset search. For people who have never had the knowledge of shopping for a playset, it's quite a daunting task. There are many makes and models and heights and configurations to choose from, and everything the genuine playthings are extra. Perhaps you could buy a fairly cheap wooden body, but all of your children would be able to do is stare at it wistfully since it would be nothing more than an oversized sawhorse.I continued to shop around online for weeks before day finally came up when I spotted my dream swing action set. It experienced everything I'd imagined. The only real problem was I couldn't find the money for it. During the period of the following weeks, I visited the playset several times, hoping to occur upon a sales. Then, mid-summer, it finally happened. The company experienced what constituted a storewide sales in playset circles: free gangplank weekend. I used to be sold.Free gangplank weekend was a huge coup for me, and I breathed a sigh of comfort that the hunting and agonizing and planning was over. Then your sales guy strike me with the invoice. Just under $2,000. And it was FREE gangplank weekend! The playset has been bought and payed for, supplied and erected in our yard for almost yearly, but it was not used much. Or maybe I should say it was not played with up to $2,000 would warrant. We haven't made our money back on it yet, but a few items have been well worth their price. The swings and trapeze bar. That's really all you need. Take it from someone whose been used up.The kids still wander aimlessly about the back garden, ignoring the main one component, the priciest one, that they lobbied so vehemently, the fort. It sits empty except for the birds and the squirrels. But maybe if we installed a Television in there...
