It's that time of yr again: playset season. The time when millions of parents get ready to pay out thousands of dollars for small-scale yard jungle gyms for their beloved children.For years I'd were able to successfully avert this requirement of suburban family life. And, one day something happened.I cracked.I can't even blame my kids. They never badgered me or complained. I'm not even sure they sought a playset. No. I wanted one.If we were outdoors in the backyard my kids wandered around aimlessly, invariably going back inside to the sofa. I needed to shoo them back outside and shout, "Go play!" But using what? We didn't have a pool or swings or perhaps a paved driveway to sketch on. I decided for my very own sanity and their survival we needed a playset.Visions of summer days whiled away on the swingset or in the attached fort with children's laughter floating by on the balmy breeze, danced in my own head. But I needed a very important factor to be correctly clear. EASILY would take out a second mortgage to finance a playset, my kids were going to have to live on it--literally.The playset we eyed-up had a house-like enclosure and a picnic table and was basically as large as my house. It was certainly a suitable dwelling for two smallish people. They could come inside for the wintertime but not until then. If we ran some electric wiring and domestic plumbing to the fort, I would never have to see them again.But much like most fantasies, once came to the realization, the facts on the floor don't quite match the eye-sight, and so it was with the playset.My research on playsets commenced prior to springtime because I thought if we bought in the off-season, we would be able to get an acceptable price. I had been mistaken. A couple of no reasonable prices when it comes to playsets. I have no idea if the hardware is sturdy silver or if the structure is made of rare, endangered real wood, but bargains are not to be enjoyed. THEREFORE I considered a choice a friend suggested: used playsets. One could get a complete playset for one half the price. That possessed my name written all over it.Unfortunately, it did not have my husband's name written onto it. He was against the complete playset idea from the beginning--it would damage his turf. If, however, I was going to insist he acknowledge he has children and that they require toys, then he motivated he would desire a deluxe model worthy of being put atop his pristine grass.Still, I continued in my seek out pre-owned models, persuaded I could meet us both. And I was successful in finding a used playset in relatively good condition large enough for just two school-age kids. It even got a rock wall. But the best benefit was it only cost in regards to a thousand bucks. Win was mine.Then my hubby pointed out the playset was anywhere beyond your tri-state area, and we didn't have a vehicle large enough to transport it even if we performed want to take the half-day drive to travel get it. I nodded silently. I grasped. And with a heavy heart, I quit on my used playset search.For people who have never had the experience of shopping for a playset, it's a significant daunting task. There are plenty of makes and models and levels and configurations to choose from, and everything the actual playthings are extra. Perhaps you could buy a fairly cheap wooden structure, but all your children would be able to do is stare at it wistfully since it would be nothing more than an large sawhorse.I continued to shop around online for weeks before day finally arrived when I spotted my dream golf swing set. It acquired everything I'd imagined. The only problem was I couldn't manage it. Over the course of the following weeks, I went to the playset many times, hoping to happen upon a sale. Then, mid-summer, it finally occurred. The company got what constituted a storewide sales in playset circles: free gangplank weekend. I was sold.Free gangplank weekend was a huge coup for me, and I breathed a sigh of relief that the hunting and agonizing and planning was over. Then the sales guy strike me with the costs. Just under $2,000. And it was FREE gangplank weekend!The playset has been bought and payed for, sent and erected inside our yard for almost yearly, but it was not used much. Or possibly I should say it was not played with approximately $2,000 would warrant. We haven't made our cash back on it yet, but a few items have been well worth their price. The swings and trapeze bar. That's really all you need. Take it from someone whose been burned up.The kids still wander aimlessly about the back garden, ignoring the main one component, the most expensive one, that they lobbied so vehemently, the fort. It sits empty aside from the birds and the squirrels. But maybe if we installed a Television set in there...
