It's that point of season again: playset season. The time when millions of parents get ready to pay out thousands of dollars for small-scale backyard jungle gyms for his or her beloved children.For a long time I'd were able to efficiently avert this dependence on suburban family life. And, 1 day something happened.I cracked.I cannot even blame my kids. They never badgered me or complained. I'm not sure they wanted a playset. No. I needed one.If we were outside the house in the backyard my kids wandered around aimlessly, invariably returning inside to the couch. I wanted to shoo them back again outdoors and shout, "Go play!" But with what? We didn't have a pool or swings or perhaps a paved driveway to draw on. I chose for my own sanity and their success we needed a playset.Visions of summer season days whiled away on a swingset or in the attached fort with children's laughter floating by over a balmy breeze, danced in my head. But I needed one thing to be perfectly clear. EASILY was going to take out another mortgage to financing a playset, my kids were going to have to go on it--literally.The playset we eyed-up got a house-like enclosure and a picnic desk and was pretty much as big as my house. It had been certainly the right dwelling for two smallish people. They could come inside for the wintertime however, not until then. In case we ran some electric wiring and plumbing related to the fort, I would not ever have to see them again.But much like most fantasies, once recognized, the facts on the floor don't quite match the eye-sight, therefore it was with the playset.My research on playsets commenced prior to springtime because I thought if we bought in the off-season, we may be capable of geting an acceptable price. I got mistaken. There are no acceptable prices as it pertains to playsets. I have no idea if the hardware is sturdy silver or if the composition is made of rare, endangered real wood, but bargains aren't to be enjoyed. So I considered an option a friend suggested: used playsets. You can get a whole playset for half the purchase price. That experienced my name written all over it.Unfortunately, it didn't have my husband's name written onto it. He was against the complete playset idea from the beginning--it would damage his grass. If, however, I was going to insist he recognize he has children and that they require playthings, then he motivated he would need a deluxe model worthy of being put atop his pristine grass.Still, I persisted in my seek out pre-owned models, persuaded I could satisfy us both. And I was successful to find a used playset in relatively good condition large enough for just two school-age kids. It even got a rock wall structure. But the best part was it only cost in regards to a thousand bucks. Triumph was mine.Then my hubby pointed out the playset was someplace beyond your tri-state area, and we didn't have a car large enough to transport it even if we performed want to take the half-day drive going get it. I nodded silently. I grasped. And with much heart, I gave up on my used playset search.For those who have never had the knowledge of shopping for a playset, it's quite a daunting task. The company had what constituted a storewide sale in playset circles: free gangplank weekend. I used to be sold.Free gangplank weekend was a huge coup for me, and I breathed a sigh of alleviation that the hunting and agonizing and planning was over. Then your sales guy strike me with the charge. Just under $2,000. And it was FREE gangplank weekend!The playset has been bought and paid for, supplied and erected in our yard for nearly annually, but it hasn't been played with much. Or possibly I should say it hasn't been played with as much as $2,000 would warrant. We haven't made our cash back onto it yet, but a few items have been worth their price. The swings and trapeze bar. That's really all you have to. Take it from someone whose been burned up.The youngsters still wander aimlessly about the back garden, ignoring the one component, the most expensive one, for which they lobbied so vehemently, the fort. It sits empty except for the birds and the squirrels. But maybe if we installed a TV in there...
