It's that time of calendar year again: playset season. The time when millions of parents prepare yourself to pay out thousands of dollars for small-scale yard jungle gyms because of their beloved children.For years I'd managed to successfully avert this requirement of suburban family life. And then, 1 day something happened.I cracked.I can't even blame my kids. They never badgered me or complained. I'm not even sure they desired a playset. No. I wanted one.Whenever we were outside in the garden my kids wandered around aimlessly, invariably coming back inside to the couch. I wanted to shoo them again outside and shout, "Go play!" But with what? We didn't have a pool or swings or even a paved driveway to pull on. I made the decision for my very own sanity and their success we needed a playset.Visions of summer days and nights whiled away over a swingset or in the fastened fort with children's laughter floating by on a balmy breeze, danced in my head. But I wanted one thing to be flawlessly clear. If I would take out another mortgage to funding a playset, my kids were going to have to go on it--literally.The playset we eyed-up possessed a house-like enclosure and a picnic desk and was pretty much as big as my house. It had been certainly the right dwelling for two smallish people. They could come inside for the winter but not until then. If we ran some electric wiring and domestic plumbing to the fort, I would never have to see them again.But as with most fantasies, once became aware, the facts on the ground don't quite match the eyesight, therefore it was with the playset.My research on playsets commenced prior to spring because I thought if we bought in the off-season, we might be able to get an acceptable price. I had been mistaken. A couple of no reasonable prices as it pertains to playsets. I have no idea if the hardware is stable silver or if the framework is made of rare, endangered lumber, but bargains are not to be enjoyed. So I considered a choice a friend recommended: used playsets. One could get a whole playset for half the purchase price. That possessed my name written all over it.Unfortunately, it did not have my husband's name written on it. He was against the complete playset idea from the beginning--it would damage his turf. If, however, I was going to insist he recognize he has children and that they require playthings, then he driven he would desire a deluxe model worthy of being placed atop his pristine backyard.Still, I persisted in my seek out pre-owned models, convinced I could gratify us both. And I was successful in finding a used playset in relatively good condition large enough for just two school-age kids. It even acquired a rock wall membrane. But the best benefit was it only cost about a thousand bucks. Success was mine.Then my husband pointed out the playset was someplace outside the tri-state area, and we didn't have a vehicle large enough to transport it even if we have want to take the half-day drive to travel get it. I nodded silently. I known. And with much heart, I gave up on my used playset search.For those who have never had the experience of shopping for a playset, it's quite a daunting task. There are various makes and models and levels and configurations to choose from, and all the actual playthings are extra. I suppose you may buy a fairly cheap wooden frame, but your entire children can do is stare at it wistfully because it would be only an large sawhorse.I continued to comparison shop online for weeks before day finally emerged when I noticed my dream swing action set. It got everything I'd imagined. The one problem was I couldn't manage it. Over the course of the following weeks, I been to the playset several times, hoping to happen upon a sales. Then, mid-summer, it finally occurred. The company experienced what constituted a storewide sales in playset circles: free gangplank weekend. I got sold.Free gangplank weekend was a huge coup for me personally, and I breathed a sigh of relief that the hunting and agonizing and planning was over. And it was FREE gangplank weekend!The playset has been bought and paid for, sent and erected inside our yard for almost per annum, but it hasn't been played with much. Or maybe I will say it was not played with as much as $2,000 would warrant. We haven't made our money back on it yet, but a few items have been worth their price. The swings and trapeze club. That's really all you need. Take it from someone whose been burned up.The kids still wander aimlessly about the garden, ignoring the main one component, the priciest one, that they lobbied so vehemently, the fort. It rests empty except for the birds and the squirrels. But maybe if we installed a Television in there...
