It's that time of calendar year again: playset season. The time when an incredible number of parents get ready to pay out thousands of dollars for small-scale yard jungle gyms because of their beloved children.For a long time I'd were able to successfully avert this dependence on suburban family life. And, one day something happened.I cracked.I can't even blame my kids. They never badgered me or complained. I'm not sure they sought a playset. No. I wanted one.If we were outdoors in the garden my kids wandered around aimlessly, invariably returning inside to the sofa. I wanted to shoo them back outside the house and shout, "Go play!" But with what? We didn't have a pool or swings or even a paved driveway to draw on. I determined for my very own sanity and their survival we needed a playset.Visions of summer time times whiled away on the swingset or in the fastened fort with children's laughter floating by on a balmy air flow, danced in my own head. But I needed a very important factor to be properly clear. EASILY was going to take out a second mortgage to fund a playset, my kids were heading to have to live on it--literally.The playset we eyed-up had a house-like enclosure and a picnic table and was nearly as large as my house. It was certainly a suitable dwelling for just two smallish people. They could come inside for the winter but not until then. And when we ran some electric wiring and plumbing related to the fort, I would never have to see them again.But much like most fantasies, once came to the realization, the facts on the floor don't quite match the eyesight, and so it was with the playset.My research on playsets commenced well before spring because I thought if we bought in the off-season, we might be capable of geting a reasonable price. I had been mistaken. You can find no sensible prices as it pertains to playsets. I have no idea if the hardware is sturdy gold or if the structure is made of rare, endangered hardwood, but bargains aren't to be enjoyed. THEREFORE I considered a choice a friend suggested: used playsets. One could get a whole playset for one half the price. That possessed my name written around it.Unfortunately, it didn't have my husband's name written onto it. He was against the complete playset idea from the beginning--it would affect his grass. If, however, I was going to insist he acknowledge he has children and that they require gadgets, then he determined he would desire a deluxe model worth being positioned atop his pristine yard.Still, I continuing in my seek out pre-owned models, persuaded I could gratify us both. And I was successful in finding a used playset in relatively good condition large enough for two school-age kids. It even acquired a rock wall structure. But the best benefit was it only cost about a thousand bucks. Triumph was mine.Then my hubby described the playset was someplace outside the tri-state area, and we didn't have a car large enough to transport it even if we do want to take the half-day drive going get it. I nodded silently. I comprehended. And with much heart, I gave up on my used playset search.For people who have never had the experience of shopping for a playset, it's a significant daunting task. There are various makes and models and levels and configurations to choose from, and all the genuine playthings are extra. I suppose you might buy a reasonably cheap wooden shape, but your children would be able to do is stare at it wistfully since it would be nothing more than an large sawhorse.I continued to comparison shop online for weeks until the day finally came up when I discovered my dream swing set. It experienced everything I'd dreamed. The one problem was I couldn't afford it. Over the course of the next weeks, I seen the playset many times, hoping to occur upon a sales. Then, mid-summer, it finally occurred. The company acquired what constituted a storewide sales in playset circles: free gangplank weekend. I used to be sold.Free gangplank weekend was an enormous coup for me, and I breathed a sigh of relief that the hunting and agonizing and planning was over. Then the sales guy struck me with the monthly bill. Just under $2,000. And it was FREE gangplank weekend!The playset has been bought and paid for, delivered and erected in our yard for almost per annum, but it hasn't been used much. Or maybe I should say it hasn't been played with just as much as $2,000 would warrant. We haven't made our money back on it yet, but a few items have been well worth their price. The swings and trapeze pub. That's really all you need. Take it from someone whose been burned up.The youngsters still wander aimlessly about the yard, ignoring the main one component, the most expensive one, for which they lobbied so vehemently, the fort. It rests empty except for the parrots and the squirrels. But maybe if we installed a Television set in there...
