It's that point of time again: playset season. The time when an incredible number of parents get ready to shell out thousands of dollars for small-scale garden jungle gyms because of their beloved children.For years I'd managed to effectively avert this requirement of suburban family life. And, one day something happened.I cracked.I cannot even blame my kids. They never badgered me or complained. I'm not even sure they needed a playset. No. I wanted one.If we were outside in the back garden my kids wandered around aimlessly, invariably going back inside to the sofa. I wanted to shoo them back again outside the house and shout, "Go play!" But with what? We didn't have a pool or swings or even a paved driveway to draw on. I made a decision for my very own sanity and their success we needed a playset.Visions of summer time days and nights whiled away on a swingset or in the attached fort with children's laughter floating by on a balmy air flow, danced in my own head. But I needed a very important factor to be correctly clear. EASILY would take out another mortgage to finance a playset, my kids were going to have to go on it--literally.The playset we eyed-up got a house-like enclosure and a picnic stand and was practically as large as my house. It had been certainly the right dwelling for just two smallish people. They could come inside for the wintertime however, not until then. And if we ran some electric wiring and plumbing to the fort, I might not ever have to see them again.But much like most fantasies, once realized, the facts on the floor don't quite match the eye-sight, and so it was with the playset.My research on playsets commenced prior to spring and coil because I thought if we bought in the off-season, we would be able to get an acceptable price. I got mistaken. There are no affordable prices when it comes to playsets. I don't know if the hardware is sound platinum or if the framework is constructed of rare, endangered lumber, but bargains are not to be enjoyed. THEREFORE I considered an option a friend suggested: used playsets. You can get a complete playset for half the purchase price. That experienced my name written around it.Unfortunately, it did not have my husband's name written onto it. He was against the complete playset idea from the beginning--it would harm his lawn. If, however, I would insist he recognize he has children and that they require toys and games, then he driven he would need a deluxe model worth being placed atop his pristine yard.Still, I continued in my search for pre-owned models, convinced I could fulfill us both. And I was successful in finding a used playset in relatively good condition large enough for just two school-age kids. It even got a rock wall. But the best benefit was it only cost in regards to a thousand bucks. Success was mine.Then my hubby described the playset was someplace outside the tri-state area, and we didn't have a car large enough to move it even if we performed want to take the half-day drive going get it. I nodded silently. I grasped. And with a heavy heart, I gave up on my used playset search.For people who have never had the experience of shopping for a playset, it's quite a daunting task. There are many makes and models and levels and configurations to choose from, and all the actual playthings are extra. I suppose you may buy a fairly cheap wooden body, but your children would be able to do is stare at it wistfully since it would be only an large sawhorse.I continued to comparison shop online for weeks before day finally came up when I noticed my dream swing action set. It acquired everything I'd dreamed. The only real problem was I couldn't find the money for it. Over the course of the next weeks, I seen the playset several times, hoping to occur upon a sales. Then, mid-summer, it finally occurred. The company got what constituted a storewide sales in playset circles: free gangplank weekend. I was sold.Free gangplank weekend was a huge coup for me, and I breathed a sigh of alleviation that the hunting and agonizing and planning was over. Then your sales guy struck me with the bill. Just under $2,000. And it was FREE gangplank weekend!The playset has been bought and paid for, sent and erected in our yard for nearly yearly, but it was not played with much. Or possibly I should say it was not played with up to $2,000 would warrant. We haven't made our cash back onto it yet, but a few items have been well worth their price. The swings and trapeze pub. That's really all you have to. Take it from someone whose been burnt.The kids still wander aimlessly about the yard, ignoring the main one component, the priciest one, that they lobbied so vehemently, the fort. It rests empty except for the birds and the squirrels. But maybe if we installed a TV in there...
